A Simple Guide for Easy Blind Cleaning and Maintenance

When windows are open on a cool, breezy day, it’s an invitation for dust and dirt to enter your home. Proper blind maintenance can help keep your blinds' shiny luster and prevent dust or grime from settling into the slats or mechanical parts.

Our team at Eagle Harbor Window Coverings is delighted to share some tips on how to clean your blinds and our selection of window blinds if it's time to replace them.

Simple Strategies for Blind Maintenance

Some cleaning professionals recommend tidying your blinds weekly or monthly to avoid dust or dirt build-up, making quarterly or annual deep cleaning much easier. While there isn’t a right or wrong way to clean your blinds, there are some strategies to consider before diving into your task.

1. Dusting

Dust each slat from top to bottom using a microfiber cloth or feather duster. For blinds with a lot of dust build-up, use a vacuum attachment. Rather than using a microfiber or duster, you may find using a sock to remove the debris much more manageable. Utilizing old socks can give you a better grip on the slats and collect the dust.

2. Using Cleaner

You can maintain your blinds with weekly dusts and follow up with a cleanser. For example, use a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle to saturate each slat and wipe clean with a cloth. Once you’re done, thoroughly dry each slat to avoid any streaks or water spots. Alternatively, you can use furniture polish or a dryer sheet if your blinds are wood, as water can damage the grain.

3. Removing Blinds

For a deeper clean on your vinyl or aluminum blinds, remove them from the windows and take them to the bathtub. Lay your blinds flat in the tub and clean them with warm water, dish soap, and vinegar. Be sure not to leave your blinds to soak, which can cause warping. When you’re done, gently shake the water out. Hang them up to dry in your shower, or you may put them back up on the window.
